UNBEATEN Lightweight champion Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov will see Interim champion Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier at UFC 242 on Saturday, 7th September, but this title unification bout has revealed Khabib still has one eye on The Notorious One.
Although Nurmagomedov will have his work cut out defending his title against Poirier it appears his thoughts remain very much on Conor McGregor who he defeated to win the title last October.
Nurmagomedov told ESPN: “Even this fight finished like, not everything is finished. Just smashing people it’s not enough. We have to smash all his team. This is not about fight, something like this, and it’s never been finished. Never, ever. Even if we see (McGregor) somewhere, we’re going to fight, 100 percent. It doesn’t matter, someone go jail or something. I don’t care. If someone has to go to jail, he goes to jail. We run this show. We smashed him. We smashed his team. They go to the hospital, we go to the police. That’s it.”
It appears his beef with the notorious Irishman is far from over.
UFC president Dana White will be hoping McGregor and his team will be staying far away from the event next Saturday, as their post-fight melee last year resulted in both stars serving lengthy suspensions and holding up the lightweight division.
In a move that see the UFC global expansion plan kicking in to full effect they will be holding their first main event in Abu Dhabi for over 5 years in a new purpose built stadium, The Arena on Yas Island.
A 5 year partnership with the UAE Department of Culture & Tourism will see the UFC return yearly until 2024 and ensure the organisation cashes in on the popularity of Nurmagomedov in the Middle East.
It will be difficult to watch Khabib versus poirier live free.
